Throwback Thursday: Do You Remember...?

A photo and story of a historic moment in Enfield history.

ENFIELD, CT — In this weekly series, Enfield Patch usually publishes a photo of a business or landmark in town that is no longer in existence.

Must like last week's offering, today we go back to a historic event that happened in town - a visit from then-presidential candidate John F. Kennedy just before the 1960 election.

Kennedy, 43, was challenging Vice President Richard Nixon for the presidency, and just prior to Election Day, scheduled a campaign speech in Hartford. En route to the capital city, the Massachusetts senator's motorcade stopped briefly in Enfield on the Hartford-Springfield Expressway, now known as Interstate 91.

Award-winning newspaper photographer Edward Malley snapped a few images of Kennedy before he departed; those pictures, shown here, are included in a photo book, Enfield: 1950-1980, compiled by Malley's son, James.

Kennedcy went on to win the presidency by a narrow margin, serving until his assassination in Dallas, Tex. on Nov. 22, 1963.
