Throwback Thursday: Do You Remember...?

A photo and story of a landmark from Enfield's past.

ENFIELD, CT — In this weekly series, Enfield Patch publishes a photo of a business or landmark in town that is no longer in existence.

Today we remember a favorite spot for thousands of children growing up on the eastern edge of town: the pool at Green Manor Park.

Comprised of 30 streets in several neighborhoods, the Green Manorville section of Enfield was a close-knit small "community within itself" per se, with children almost exclusively walking to the neighborhood elementary school on Taylor Road - Nathan Hale.

Across the street from the school was a recreation area, Green Manor Park, highlighted by the pool. It was built in the 1950s as the town's population exploded, and remained a staple of neighborhood activities for more than four decades.

The pool began falling into disrepair, and was permanently closed in early 2002.

A $9.95 million recreation referendum, which would have included replacing the pool, was defeated by voters in November of that year. The space was filled in shortly thereafter.

The overhead views shown from Google Earth were taken in 1990, 2003 and 2015.
