Opened in 1964, Thaddeus Kosciuszko Junior High School was named for a Polish military leader who fought on the American side during the Revolutionary War.
Located in a two-story brick building at 170 Elm Street, the school’s name was undoubtedly quite difficult to spell, prompting the recitation of “Keep Our School Clean If U See Zebras Keep Out” as a means to learn the correct spelling.

“The Big K” closed in 1982, when Enfield school administrators moved ninth-graders into the town’s high schools and shifted all seventh- and eighth-grade students to John F. Kennedy Middle School.
After a brief period of vacancy, the Elm Street building became home to Asnuntuck Community College in 1983.
