Wayback Wednesday: The Day JFK Came to Enfield

The presidential candidate made a brief stop in Enfield, which was captured in several photographs, just days before the 1960 election.

ENFIELD, CT — November 22 will be known forever as a day of infamy in American history. It was on this date in 1963 that President John F. Kennedy was assassinated in Dallas, Texas.

Most Americans over age 55 remember where they were when they received the news that the president had been murdered. Patch would like our readers to share their stories of where they were at the time and their recollections of that terrible day.

Just days prior to the 1960 election, then-Sen. Kennedy made a campaign swing through northern Connecticut, stopping briefly in Enfield on the Hartford-Springfield Expressway (now known as Interstate 91). Enfield resident Edward Malley, a longtime photographer for the Springfield newspapers, snapped several pictures of Kennedy that day, two of which are published here courtesy of his son, James Malley.
