We Deserve Better From Our Elected Officials

The actions of Republican officials in town over the past few weeks have left me contemplative of professionalism and decorum in politics. Over the past decade, we have seen a degradation in how our public servants treat the public they serve. I think that's something that we, the public, should push back on. In the spirit of transparency, I am an elected official in this town myself, serving as one of the constables. Our elected officials are meant to be representatives of us, and their actions should show that. Two elected officials come to mind when thinking about this subject, specifically in reference to our local politics. Both Rob Anderson, member of the Board of Education, and Carol Hall, Town Council minority leader and state representative, have made worrisome statements.

As many of us know, the budget process has begun. A major topic of discussion heading into this process was whether the meetings would be televised. They were televised for the first time during the last council's term. The public was made aware that the consensus amongst the current council was that budget deliberations would be made public again. Sticking to this goal, two of them are already on the town’s YouTube channel for viewing, with the rest to follow. However, according to Rob Anderson, the council had decided that they would not be.



Anderson had been spreading this misinformation across the town’s various Facebook pages. He stated that Mayor Gina Cekala and Deputy Mayor John Santanella prevented the budget deliberations from being televised, claiming he had confirmation. When questioned about this statement and the source of his information, he was unable to provide any. He instead said it was up to the mayor and deputy to be transparent, all while hiding his sources. These contradictory statements were further proven false by the fact that the meetings have been televised and will continue to be so.

This was not the only one of Anderson’s transgressions. For context, a bipartisan decision was made at a previous meeting to remove the board comments section from all future meetings. This decision was made to make meetings more efficient and timely. During the April 14th, 2026, meeting of the Board of Education, both Anderson and his fellow Republican member Phil Kober chose to speak during the public comments section. This is a section of the meeting reserved for members of the public to have their voices heard. It is not intended for active members of the board to participate in. They used this time to complain that the Board comments section had been removed. Both Anderson and Kober declined to mention ahead of time that they wished to speak. Board members still have a clear procedure to add times of importance to the agenda. Instead of using this, they surprised the rest of the board, leaving both the chair and superintendent unsure how to act legally and without time to get the town attorney’s opinion.

The other matter of importance that arose came from the April 29th, 2026 budget deliberations meeting. Republican Carol Hall gave her stance on education, stating, “I am definitely looking at cuts for the Board’s [of Education] budget.” She did note, however, that she had yet to speak with her fellow Republicans on the council about their budget plans. Despite being over a month into this process, the Republicans have no budget plan other than Carol Hall’s desire to cut education once more.

It’s important to note that in 2025, Republicans lost the Town Council and Board of Education in a decisive sweep. Now, it is impossible to say what every individual voter wanted, but a major factor was the Republican council’s gutting of education in Enfield. Over one hundred teachers were fired from the school system, a decision that many parents were against.

While it is true that Republicans are not in charge of the budget process this term, it does show that Republicans are prioritizing cutting education going into 2027. The election results of this current term show that the people of Enfield want education to be supported, rather than diminished. So why does Carol Hall choose to ignore them?

The Incident at the Board of Education

Rep. Carol Hall Says She Wants to Cut Education's Funding
