20 People Rescued From Cars During Flash Flooding In Fairfield
Fairfield Police update residents on the recovery from yesterday's storm that quickly dumped 6 inches of rain and led to 36 cars being towed

FAIRFIELD, CT — Emergency crews rescued 20 people during yesterday’s flash flooding in Fairfield and 36 cars were towed after being stalled in the water, according to police. Power has also been restored to the as many as 1,000 homes that lost power yesterday, according to United Illuminating. Fairfield is recovering from yesterday’s storm after up to 6 inches of rain fell in town over a short period of time. This resulted in extensive flooding throughout town and much more rain than projected. Almost all roads are clear as of this morning.
Please do not drive through standing water. 36 cars were towed after being stalled in water too deep to drive through and 20 people had to be rescued. If you left your car and it was towed, please call the Police Department at (203) 254-4800 to find out where to recover the vehicle.

The storm and flooding conditions caused the Fairfield Emergency Communications Center (ECC -Police/Fire/EMS) to be deluged with calls. We extend a special thanks to our ECC Operators for handling the overflow and keeping our emergency lines open.
Fairfield Police, Fire, DPW and ECC personnel responded quickly to the storm and flooding. Many areas/roads flooded yesterday that are not normally prone to flooding.

UI reported up to 1,000 homes lost power. All restored this morning.
We will be sending out teams from the Police, Fire and Health Departments to visit and inspect neighborhoods/streets that experienced the greatest impact from flooding. If you have questions, please just flag them down. They will be happy to help.
Residents are encouraged to survey their homes for any hazards. If you are having the following kinds of issues, immediately Dial 911:
• Smell smoke, have an odor of gas, or see fire
• Fuel oil smell in basement
• Electrical system damaged by water
• Damaged propane or oil tanks
If your vehicle was towed please call the Police Department at 203-254-4800.
If your furnace is damaged by water, call your heating contractor.
If your basement is flooded, call a restoration company.
