3 Firefighters Injured Battling 'Stubborn' Fairfield Fire
Residents said they heard fireworks going off before seeing the blaze, according to the Fairfield Fire Department.

FAIRFIELD, CT — Three firefighters were injured Sunday battling a large blaze in Fairfield, according to the fire department.
The incident began about 9 p.m., when a Chestnut Street resident reported a fire in the rear of her house, according to a news release from the Fairfield Fire Department. Responding emergency personnel saw a column of smoke en route to the scene and heavy fire upon arrival. Residents said they heard fireworks going off nearby before seeing the blaze, according to the news release.
The fire spread across a large marsh between Chestnut Street and Grasmere Avenue that included a section of the Metro-North Railroad tracks, bringing train traffic in the area to a halt, the news release said. The Bridgeport and Norwalk fire departments helped Fairfield firefighters take on the fire from three locations.

The blaze, which the news release described as “stubborn,” was under control before 10:30 p.m., according to the news release. The train tracks reopened shortly afterward.
The three firefighters who were hurt all suffered minor injuries, the news release said. Two were treated at the scene and the third was taken to a hospital and later released.

The Westport, Stratfield and Southport fire departments provided coverage of the town during the blaze.
The cause of the fire was under investigation as of early Monday morning.
