Fairfield Bank Robber Pretended To Have Gun: Police

The man insinuated he had a gun and pointed what witnesses believed to be a firearm at tellers, demanding money, Fairfield police said.

FAIRFIELD, CT — A man accused of robbing a Fairfield bank Wednesday was not armed, but did pretend to have a gun and threatened employees of the business, according to police.

William Johnson was arrested and charged with first-degree robbery and second-degree larceny not long after the robbery, police said.

The crime occurred just before noon at Key Bank, 1761 Post Road, where Johnson insinuated he had a gun and pointed what witnesses believed to be a firearm at tellers, demanding money, according to police, who said Johnson then fled, leaving the area in a gray taxi.

Authorities worked with local taxi companies to track a vehicle matching the description to East Main Street in Bridgeport, where Johnson was taken into custody, according to police. In Johnson’s backpack, law enforcement found the cash stolen from Key Bank, police said.

“This is a traumatic event for those inside the bank,” Capt. Antonio Granata said in an email. “Luckily no one was hurt and the suspect was quickly taken into custody.”

Johnson, 42, of Clinton Avenue in Bridgeport, is being held on $100,000 bail, according to police.
