Bastille Day Offers Food, Fun...and the World Cup!
Annual Event on Sanford Street Continues to 6 P.M.
Parlez-vous Francais? You don't need to speak a word of French to understand why people are making a pit stop on Sanford Street Sunday. It's Fairfield's 11th annual street fair celebrating Bastille Day (France's version of July 4th.)
The festival began at noon and runs until 6 p.m. Like all street fairs, the food is definitely the draw. Blue Lemon of Westport and Fairfield restaurants Cafe Lola and The Brasserie (formerly known as St. Tropez) are cooking up a storm of French favorites. There's even a tent serving delicious crepes - definitely go for the nutella and banana one. Like any good European-style festival, there's a tent serving alcohol and it's appropriately placed not far from the petanque matches. Petanque is a French lawn sport played on sand "courses" and is similar to bocce.
In addition to food, there are tents showcasing a variety of wares, including jewelry, handbags, and other accessories. FTC (Fairfield Theater Company) is handing out balloons to children and Fairfield's Youth Shakespeare theater group is sporting costumes and handing out reminders of its upcoming performance of "Twelfth Night" at Greenfield Hill Congregational Church (admission is free - performances are July 15 to 18 at 6 p.m) Speaking of the kids, there are several tents offering crafts, tattoos, and other kid-themed projects.

Worried that you'll miss the finals of the World Cup? Don't fear, since The Brasserie is keeping the TVs tuned in so you can pop in and catch the score.
Vive la France!
