7 Essential Pool Safety Tips

Kids Space Place offers tips to ensure that your family has a safe and enjoyable summer around the pool!

 

It’s been hot! VERY hot! And since the beginning of the summer, Adults and Children a-like have cooling off in a swimming pool on their mind.  

With the number of completely preventable deaths and hospitalizations due to pool and spa drownings, Kids Space Place offers some important time to ensure that children, parents and care-givers remain worry-free for the remainder of the summer.

1 – Supervision - Never leave children unaccompanied, no matter how well they usually swim. Accidents happen quickly. Even for adults, company is best. Should there be any emergency, there will always be someone readily available to jump in and/or call for help. The faster the reaction, the better chance of survival there will be for the individual in trouble.  

2 – Fencing - Secure fencing is essential to pool safety. This prevents others from wandering into your pool and may save a life!

3 – Pool and Spa Covers – An easy way to keep your family and neighbors safe. Having a sturdy cover will reduce the temptation to ‘jump into the neighbor’s pool’ or the risk for a child to need to retrieve a toy. (They also helps to keep small animals and leaves out…)  

4 – Alarms – Install an alarm which sounds off as soon as a splash is detected. These are easy to disarm when you want to enjoy your pool, but could also save a life.  

5 – Safety Drain Covers – Secure covers with very small holes prevent drowning without jeopardizing the cleanliness of your pool. These covers continue to allow the debris you don’t want in your pool to be suck into the filter, but prevent fingers and long hair from getting caught.  

6 – Swimming Lessons - Lessons are essential for children and care givers. Not only does the ability to swim drastically reduce the risk of drowning, they ensure that caregivers are not frightened to jump in to help your child.  

7 – CPR – CPR and First Aid training can the difference in an emergency. Being able to administer the appropriate care until a professional or medic arrives on the scene may greatly reduce risks such as brain damage and ensure survival.
