Opinion: Call for Special Election to Fill First Selectman Vacancy

Under Connecticut law, a Special Election is Explicitly Allowed Through a Petition.

The following opinion essay is by the Fairfield Republican Town Committee:

Fairfield, CT — August 18th, 2025 — Following the tragic loss of Fairfield’s First Selectman, the town now faces a pivotal choice: who will lead Fairfield forward? Under the Town Charter, the remaining members of the Board of Selectmen, Selectmen Kupchick and Vitale, had 30 days to appoint a successor. That deadline has passed without a decision.

By law, the process now shifts to state statute, which allows a small group of party insiders to appoint a replacement. But the same statute also gives Fairfield’s citizens the right to petition for a special election, putting the decision back where it belongs: in the hands of the voters.

Fairfield deserves the chance to choose its leader. We cannot allow this decision to be made behind closed doors by a handful of insiders. The time for a special election is now.

Why a Special Election Matters

1. Direct Representation Is the Cornerstone of Democracy

The First Selectman is Fairfield’s highest elected official, responsible for the town’s budget, safety, operations, and long-term planning. Filling this role without voter input undermines Fairfield’s democratic foundation.

2. The Law Protects Voter Choice

Connecticut law explicitly allows for special elections to prevent leadership vacuums and ensure accountability. This safeguard exists to protect voters from being sidelined.

3. Transparency Builds Public Confidence

Appointments made behind closed doors fuel mistrust. A special election restores transparency and ensures every voter has a say.

4. The Cost Is an Investment in Democracy

Holding a special election alongside November’s municipal elections minimizes expenses. More importantly, it strengthens public trust in government.

5. Fairfield’s Decision Sets a Precedent

How Fairfield responds will shape expectations for years to come. Choosing a special election affirms our community’s commitment to open, accountable government.

Call to Action: Sign the Petition

To trigger a special election, Fairfield residents must collect signatures from 5% of registered voters by September 9th. Signatures must be collected in person on paper forms; electronic signatures are not permitted.

Residents can get involved by:

  • Circulating petitions among friends, neighbors, and colleagues
  • Helping at signature collection drives (locations to be announced)
  • Signing the petition themselves

For more information, or to sign or help collect signatures, email fairfieldpetition@gmail.com.

Every signature matters. Together, we can ensure that Fairfield’s next First Selectman is chosen by the people, for the people.
