Details Emerge in Arrest of Fairfield Daycare Operator in Connection to Baby’s Death
The woman has pleaded not guilty to the charges related to a 4-month-old's death at an unlicensed daycare she operated out of her home.

FAIRFIELD, CT — During the investigation into the death of a 4-month-old baby in her care, Carol Cardillo told police that she didn’t have any Benadryl at the unlicensed daycare she operated out of her home. However, the Connecticut Post reports that her CVS Extra Care card shows that she purchased 90 bottles of children’s Benadryl at CVS between 2013 and 2016.
Cardillo, 53, of Edgewood Road, was arrested by Fairfield Police in September following an investigation into the infant’s death on March 22. She was charged with second-degree manslaughter, second-degree reckless endangerment and risk of injury to a minor. The arrest came nearly two months after the death of Adam Seagull, who lived in Shelton, was ruled a homicide.
Seagull was originally thought to have died from Sudden Infant Death Syndrome, but an autopsy and toxicological tests showed he had high levels of Benadryl in his system. Benadryl should not be administered to children under the age of 2, and should only be administered to children between the age of 2 and 4 years old after consultation with a doctor, police said in a press release announcing the arrest.

The Connecticut Post reports that Cardillo made the Benadryl purchases from CVS during school months, which is when her daycare was open, and not during the summer months when it was closed, according to the arrest warrant.
The warrant also shows that no CVS Benadryl purchases were made by Cardillo during the 10-week period following Seagull’s death, but she continued to make other purchases from CVS, according to the Post.
Seagull had been attending Cardillo’s daycare for only 11 days, according to the Post.
