WATCH: Driver Nearly Hits Trooper, Plows into Stopped Car on I-95

Only minor injuries were reported in the 1 a.m. crash Friday.

A 21-year-old Bridgeport man, allegedly driving recklessly on I-95 in Fairfield early Friday morning, nearly struck a Connecticut State Police trooper and then plowed into a stopped car north of exit 19 southbound, according to authorities.

At approximately 1 a.m., a trooper responded to a two-car motor vehicle accident on Interstate 95 Southbound, north of exit 19 in Fairfield. The two vehicles involved in the crash, as well as the cruiser driven by the State Trooper, were parked in the right shoulder of the highway,” according to state police.

As a second, backup trooper drove up to the scene, “he observed a Nissan Maxima traveling directly in front of him in the left lane of three at a high rate of speed. The Maxima veered right, coming within inches of the [parked state police ] cruiser in the right shoulder, and violently [struck] one of the vehicles involved in the original two-vehicle accident.”

The driver of the Maxima, Yoni Rojas, of Pond Street in Bridgeport, suffered minor injuries in the crash, no other injuries were reported. Rojas was charged with:

  • Reckless Endangerment
  • Reckless Driving
  • Misuse of Plates
  • Failure to Meet Minimum Insurance Coverage
  • Failure to Maintain Lane

“Although this particular incident is not a Move Over Law violation, it stresses the dangers of the being stopped on the highway, even if you are in the shoulder and one of the many reasons motorists are required to Move Over when approaching stopped emergency vehicles,” state police said.

Rojas was held on a $2,500 cash/surety bond and was scheduled to appear in Bridgeport Superior Court on November 27.
