FAIRFIELD, CT — Efforts to quell illegal activity at Fairfield's popular Lake Mohegan are continuing and showing some signs of improvement, according to the Conservation Commission.

From July 28 through the first week in August, Fairfield police increased patrols at the lake, logging 56 location checks, according to officials, which resulted in the issuing of seven infractions for littering, illegal drinking and illegal swimming.

Patch reached out to a police department spokesperson for comment, but did not immediately receive a reply.

Last month, the Conservation and Police departments teamed up on enforcement of the open space area, particularly around the Cascades, a stream of rapids where swimming is prohibited. Oversight of the lake falls upon the shoulders of the Conservation Department.

"Swimming in the Cascades is dangerous," said one official during a meeting Wednesday, where the commission heard a brief update on the situation at the lake.

Reports had poured into the department this summer of after hours drinking and partying at the lake, in addition to property damage from vandalism.

Young people are not the only ones breaking the town's rules concerning behavior at its open spaces. Families have also received citations, according to officials.

As for vandalism, much of it involves the security gate at the Cascades, which has been broken numerous times this summer, reported the Fairfield Citizen.
