The Fairfield Public Library is hosting an author talk with Vernona Gomez on Sunday, October 21. She will be discussing her new book Lefty: An American Odyssey in the Rotary Room of the Main Library, 1080 Old Post Road at 2 p.m.
Lefty Gomez is a baseball legend distinguished by his competitive nature, quick wit and generous spirit. Vernon “Lefty” Gomez was born to a California ranching family, the youngest of eight. Lefty rode his powerful arm and jocular personality right across America to the dugout of the New York Yankees. He baffled hitters with his blazing fastball, establishing himself as the team’s ace. He vacationed with Babe Ruth, served as Joe DiMaggio’s confidant, and consoled Lou Gehrig the day the “Iron Horse” removed himself from the lineup.
Vernona Gomez is quite a remarkable figure in her own right. She was a child piano prodigy who made her debut at the Carnegie Recital Hall at the age of 8 and still continues to work as a teacher of music in her Connecticut studio. Her collaboration with Lawrence Goldstone in writing this book has done a great service to history in detailing Lefty’s saga on and off the field. “This is a beautifully written tribute to Vernona’s parents and recaptures the magic of a time when baseball and Broadway were our true national pastimes,” says Mike Greenberg, New York Times bestselling author and co-host of ESPN’s “Mike and Mike in the Morning”.
