Fairfield Coronavirus Update: Drive-Thru Food Drive Sunday

A group of Fairfield residents will hold their third food drive Sunday for those struggling during the coronavirus outbreak.

FAIRFIELD, CT — In response to the new coronavirus and the need to replenish the Operation Hope food pantry, a group of Fairfield residents will hold their third food drive Sunday at First Church Congregational.

The drive will be 10 a.m. to noon in the parking lot of the church at 148 Beach Road.

Organizers are asking that those making donations remain in their cars and allow volunteers to unload items. Only the following foods are requested: canned stew and chili, boxed milk, jelly and canned fruits. Gift cards to local grocery stores will also be accepted.

Food drive volunteers will wear gloves and take precautions to remain safe and healthy.

The drive was started by three Fairfield residents: Helene Daly, Heather Dubrosky and Alexis Harrison, after they realized many town residents would be in need during the coronavirus pandemic. Within 48 hours, the trio held their first food drive March 15, collecting dozens of groceries, supplies and hygienic items.

"This is truly an unprecedented time in our lives and while it's critical to be apart from others and to practice social distancing, our neighbors still need our help and they need to know that they are not forgotten," Harrison said in a news release about Sunday's food drive. "We have put in safety measures and precautions where volunteers do not interact with those who are donating and we maintain safe distances from each other."
