Fairfield First Selectman Calls On Residents To Fight UI's Monopoles

"Without question, this issue affects the entire Town and our quality of life for years to come." — Fairfield First Selectman Bill Gerber

FAIRFIELD, CT — In a recent deeper dive message into the proposed project, Fairfield First Selectman Bill Gerber called on residents to continue to oppose the United Illuminating monopole project, which he believes could have a profound adverse impact on the community.

Under the proposal, UI would "take 19.25 acres of property rights over seven miles from residents, businesses, organizations, and municipalities in Fairfield and Bridgeport’s south end via permanent utility easements," according to Gerber.

After that, UI would construct dozens of monopoles that would rise 95 feet to 195 feet in the air, spaced about 40 feet apart. The poles would carry high voltage power lines, and UI said the project is necessary to modernize and harden its utility system for the future.

"Without question, this issue affects the entire Town and our quality of life for years to come," Gerber wrote.

The grassroots group, Sasco Creek Neighbors Environmental Trust Inc., is spearheading much of the opposition to the project, and it helped organize a Legislative Town Hall Meeting on Feb. 1 to discuss the project.
