FAIRFIELD, CT — The Fairfield Health Department launched free Fairfield BikeShare program on Thursday afternoon (April 21) at Zane’s Cycle.
The health department hosted a ribbon-cutting event in front of Zane’s Cycle, 1215 Post Road.
Initiated by the Fairfield Health Department and the Fairfield Public Libraries, the Fairfield BikeShare is operated by Zane’s Cycle and sponsored by Fairfield University and Sacred Heart University.
“The Fairfield BikeShare is completely free to use and consists of 10 3-speed custom designed bikes,” Santina Jaronko, health educator for the Fairfield Health Department, said in a press release. “This program gives both Fairfield residents and visitors the opportunity to borrow a bike and ride around Fairfield, visiting various locations like the beaches and one of the many great restaurants in town. Bikes can be borrowed for fun, exercise, or to park the car and run a few errands on a bike.”
Bikes can be borrowed at Zane’s Cycle, which is within walking distance of the Fairfield train station. Bikes can only be borrowed during Zane’s Cycle’s hours of operation. Borrowers must provide a valid driver’s license or state photo ID and a credit card.
“Biking is not only a form of transportation but also a form of physical activity,” Jaronko said. “According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, adults who engage in at least 150 minutes of physical activity a week, improve their overall health, live longer, and lower their risk for heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes, depression, and some cancers.
“The Fairfield Health Department, Town of Fairfield, and the Fairfield Bicycle and Pedestrian Committee along with various other organizations have been working and will continue to work to promote biking and walking to help provide ways for residents and community members to be active in Fairfield.”
The purchase of the bikes and development of the BikeShare program was made possible through the 2014-2015 Local Health Department Block Grant for Policy /Environment Change for Chronic Disease Prevention.
Zane’s Cycle is open from 10 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturdays and from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Sundays.
