Fairfield Prep Baseball Clinches Berth In State Tournament

Jesuits defeat Hamden, 5-2, to improve to 8-8

The goal of the Fairfield Prep baseball team this season was to improve on last year's 10-11 record.

Although the senior-laden Jesuits have experienced an up-and-down campaign, that goal is still within reach following Monday's 5-2 win over Hamden at Alumni Diamond that clinched a return trip to the state tournament .

Nicholas Vig tossed a complete game five-hitter and Connor Marr drove in three runs for the Jesuits, who stole seven bases. Vig walked three and struck out five.

Fairfield Prep avenged an earlier loss to the Green Dragons and improved to 8-8 with four games remaining in the regular season.

In the first inning, Dustin Fidaleo stole second and scored on Marr's RBI hit to get Fairfield Prep on the board.

The Jesuits manufactured another run in the following inning, when Max Freccia swiped second and scored on Marr's second RBI single. Andrew Hollis' successful suicide squeeze made it 3-0 in the second.

Matthew D'Ambrisi, batting for  James Richter, drew a bases-loaded walk in the fifth to give the Jesuits a 4-0 lead.

Green Dragons starter Paul Sscott struggled throughout the game with his control, allowing four runs and five hits over five innings with five walks and five strikeouts.

Hamden halved the deficit in the sixth on Will Hindinger's RBI and C.J. Carignan's sacrifice fly.  Marr drove in his final run in the bottom of the sixth.

The Jesuits look to move back over .500 Wednesday, when they visit West Haven in  a 3:45 p.m. start.

West Haven is the reigning Class LL state champions, but the Blue Devils are struggling through a difficult 2-13 season. The Jesuits beat West Haven, 8-3, in Fairfield on April 29.
