FAIRFIELD, CT — Fairfield Public Library's Board of Trustees is inviting the public to a dedication ceremony for a new mural at the Main Library on Sunday, April 19, at 2 p.m. The mural, titled “Our Backyard,” was commissioned by the board to enhance the children's space and was completed in February.

The work was created by Fairfield artist and illustrator MaryJo Scott. According to the library announcement, the mural depicts an outdoor scene with flora and fauna native to the area, including skunks, foxes, bears and birds. It is installed on the landing between the first and second floors of the Main Library, where the library said it offers a stopping point for patrons.

Scott's illustrations have appeared in many children's books, including the Corduroy concept series. The announcement states that she holds degrees in graphic design from the University of Rochester and education from the University of Bridgeport. It also states that she wrote and illustrated her first book, Sam and Lucy, in 2024.

The mural was funded by the Lerchen Family Fund in honor of Margaret “Meg” Lerchen, a former children's librarian who worked at the Main Library for many years. Board of Trustees President Andrew Minea said the project adds something new to a part of the building families already pass through.

"The Fairfield Public Library has always been more than just a building; it is a space where imagination takes root. This stunning new mural transforms a simple transit point into an invitation to wonder," Minea said. "We are incredibly grateful to the Lerchen family for their generous donation, which allows us to brighten the path for our youngest readers and celebrate the vibrant spirit of our community."
