Fairfield RTM Vote Postponed On 2026-27 Town Budget
The legislative body was scheduled to vote on Monday on the recommended $400,371,929 spending plan.

FAIRFIELD, CT — The Fairfield Representative Town Meeting on Monday postponed its scheduled vote on Fairfield's recommended $400,371,929 budget due to a technicality.
The budget vote will now take place the night of the RTM's May 26 meeting, one day after Memorial Day.
As explained by Moderator Margaret Horton during Monday's meeting, the legal posting of the budget was not published in the Connecticut Post until Friday.

"Just for understanding of the public, there are noticing requirements, even though our charter revision allows for us to bypass this if the state removes the requirement, the state still has the requirements," Horton said. "And so it is that the budget must be published in a certain newspaper of general circulation in the town no later than five days before the vote."
Since the budget was published on May 1, the scheduled May 4 vote was not five days after publication.

Budget information has been on the town's website for months, but Horton said the RTM wants to make sure the town is "fully in accordance with [the state] statute."
Following the RTM's scheduled vote on May 26, the Board of Finance is scheduled to set the mill rate at its June 2 meeting, according to officials.
