The Fairfield Giants Mitey Mites completed their season with a 18-12 victory over Shelton in the 2011 Mitey Mite Jamboree championship last Wednesday at Sullivan Field. Each team entered the game as the top seeds in their divisions.

After winning the coin toss, Shelton methodically moved 55 yards, marching to the Giants' 5 yard line, where its drive stalled after burning the entire first quarter off the clock.

Fairfield powered the ball 75 yards down to the Vikings' 20 behind strong runs by Calvin Caione, Nick Morris, Mike Innaimo and Finn Donelan.

On 1st-and-10 from the 20, Innaimo took a counter handoff up the middle for the first score of the game. Shelton answered with another time-consuming drive and this time the Vikings were able to get in the end zone, tying the contest with five minutes left in the half.

Just four plays later, the Giants grabbed a 12-6 halftime lead on TJ O'Connell's 50-yard TD run off tackle.

Fairfield opened the second half with a seven-play, 60-yard drive, taking an 18-6 lead on Caione's 10-yard burst into the end zone.

"It was incredible to watch the linemen open up these massive holes for our backs to run through," Fairfield head coach Mark Innaimo said. "They just blocked and blocked until the whistle blew, a fundamental skill you do not really see at such a young age."

The big boys up front opening those holes were Max Spies, Peter Strang, Brendan Dunleavy, Gavin Toth, Charlie WIlcox, Terrence Falvey, Owen Miller, Alex Joliet, Arron Sepot, Josh Pastore, Jack Melbourne, Charlie Scholl, Jaden Cherry and Max Curren.

After scoring in the fourth quarter, Shelton's final drive ended deep in Fairfield's territory.

Leading the defensive effort for the Giants were Caione, O'Connell, Morris, Dunleavy, Luke Martucci and RJ Ihlefeld.

Pee Wee Division

Park City Panthers 8, Fairfield Giants 6

The Giants dropped a tough playoff semifinal game to Bridgeport's Park City team in Danbury.

After going 7-1 in the regular season, including a convincing win over Park City earlier in the year, the Giants came up short in a hard-hitting game.  Each team scored a touchdown, with Fairfield's score coming late in the first on a run by Tyler Llewellyn.

Park City also recorded a safety and those two points made up the difference in the end.

Llewellyn, Jack Price, Dylan Mirabile and Ryan Sullivan battled an improved Park City defense with hard running. Gabe Reale, Robbie Farruggio and Blake Gottlieb had standout efforts for the Giants' defense.

Junior Midgets Division

New Haven Steelers 30, Fairfield Giants 0

The Fairfield Warde football team let another halftime lead slip away Saturday, surrendering 21 unanswered points in the second half in a 35-17 loss at undefeated Staples.

Short touchdown runs by Devin Lofton and David Wolff, along with Cooper Wicke's 27-yard field goal, staked the Mustangs (4-4) to a 17-14 halftime edge.

But Nick Kelly's 10-yard TD run in the third quarter put the Wreckers ahead and Jack Massie's 9-yard keeper made it 28-17. Jon Heil's 5-yard TD run in the fourth period capped the scoring.

Next week's home game against Wilton, which snapped a four-game losing streak Saturday with a 33-6 win over Westhill, will define the direction of Warde's year.

It's a winningable game against another 4-4 team and likely will determine if the Mustangs can have their first winning season under Duncan Della Volpe, who was 5-5 in his first two years at Warde.

A win would send Warde into its Thankgiving clash against winless Fairfield Ludlowe at 5-4. The Falcons dropped to 0-8 after a 48-14 loss at Danbury on Saturday.
