Wildcats Sixth Grade Red Records Fourth Shutout
The sixth grade Red Wildcats continue to impress the league with their fourth shutout in as many games, beating New Canaan, 14-0. New Canaan came out with a tough defense from the start and the Wildcats (4-0) had a difficult time getting their offense in gear. However, as the Rams took over on offense, the Wildcat defense again proved to be too much, thanks to the efforts of Luke Adelstein, Chris Nielson, Jack Curtis and Joey Turner. The game was a defensive showdown with a 0-0 score midway through the fourth quarter. A stellar 40-plus yard reception from Matt Cerminaro to Justin Keith put the Wildcats ahead 7-0. As the offense began to click in the last several minutes of the game, Sam Hawley, Jack Kovaleski, Zachary Taylor, Ian Cook, Michael Erickson and Timmy Jacobi proved to be the difference, as the Wildcats scored on an end run to put them up 14-0 and seal the victory. The Wildcats have now outscored the opponents 54-0. Next week the Wildcats travel to Ridgefield to meet the Tigers at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday.
Fourth Grade Wildcats Fall to Westport
The fourth grade Wildcats lost another tough game 18-7 at home to Westport. The game was close early as Fairfield's defense effectively slowed down Westport's ground attack with big tackles coming from lineman JP Sell, Jason Conklin and Liam Hawley as well as linebackers Griffin Gallati and Seamus Carolan. But some first-half turnovers on offense and getting beat over the top on deep passes for scores by Westport made the difference in the game. The Wildcats scored on their only possession of the second half, however, methodically marching down the field on some tough running by Joey Gulbin and Ryan Janz, culminating in a 6-yard touchdown scamper on the reverse by Conner O'Neill. Ryan Janz followed strong blocking on the right side for three yards and the extra point as time expired. The Wildcats look to get a 'W' next Sunday on the road against Ridgefield.
Fifth Grade Wildcats Defeat Westport South
The fifth grade Fairfield Wildcats made it three in a row Sunday with a 12-7 victory over Westport South. After an early scoring drive that put Westport up 7-0, the Wildcats' defense came alive with excellent penetration on the line from Dan Russell and Griffen Forberg and key fourth-down tackles from linebackers Sean Fuller and Jack Howard. The Wildcats’ offense answered the scoring drive with a 15-yard passing touchdown from quarterback David Summers to tight end Liam Harke. Following a failed conversion attempt, the score stood at 7-6. Midway through the second quarter and on their own 30-yard line, the Wildcats were forced to punt, but on the leg of Aidan Klick came a 35-yarder, forcing Westport to start on it own 20 and allowing the defense to quell Westport’s subsequent drive. The Wildcats' offensive line of Daniel Mundle, Marcelo Devalle, DJ Meyer, and Ryan Hummerstone allowed big yardage bt running backs Kevin Quinn, Jack Owens and Aidan Wykoff and receptions by Aidan Wykoff and Liam Harke. The third quarter brought another scoring drive with a long run by Jack Owens, which turned out to be the difference.
Wildcats Seventh Grade Blue Tops Undefeated Ridgefield 20-0
The seventh grade Blue team hosted previously undefeated Ridgefield Black at Warde this past Sunday and came away with a 20-0 win. Linemen Gavin Haas, Alexei Alatakis and Brendan Casey paved the way to lead the ferocious running attack. Fullback Ethan Burger pounded through the middle and scored the first Wildcats' touchdown. Quarterback Jack Dowden muscled up the middle for the second touchdown of the game. In the third quarter, running back Jack Caserta broke a 70-yard touchdown run to put the Wildcats ahead 20-0. Caserta ran for over 100 yards. Defensively, the shutout was led by Ethan Burger, Tommy Chandler, Tim Kane, and Tyler Petry. The victory was the Blue team’s third in a row.
Wildcats Third Grade Downed By Wilton
The third grade Wildcats lost a hard-fought game to Wilton Blue , 20-6. Logan Ford Bennet scored a touchdown in the first half with a fantastic run from 20 yards out. Other offensive standouts in the game were Matthew Burger with some great runs up the middle and outstanding blocking on the sweeps. Receiver Kevin Donahue had a nice catch and run on a ball thrown by quarterback Andrew Conklin. Fairfield’s offense moved the ball down the field on a regular basis with blocking help from guard John Summers and guard James Cullinan. The defensive standouts for the game included tackle Jack McKenna, linebacker Rowan Sullivan, end Harry Chandler, and linebacker Gavin McCulloch . Fairfield will look to bounce back Sunday at 3 p.m. against Wilton bantam White at Wilton High School.
Due to a town rule preventing after school activities during the Jewish holiday, the Fairfield Warde football team will not be allowed to practice on Wednesday and Thursday.
That means the Mustangs will have only three practices before Friday's contest at powerful New Canaan, which looks as potent as ever. One option would have been to practice at 5:30 a.m. on Wednesday - something Fairfield Ludlowe did last season - but Warde coach Duncan Della Volpe said in the preseason that he does not believe in before-school practices.
Della Volpe also said he asked New Canaan to push the game back to Saturday, but the request was denied, which seems surprising considering Della Volpe spent 10 years as an assistant at New Canaan and has maintained an excellent relationship with the Rams' staff, including head coach Lou Marinelli.
Of course, Warde will have its hands full with New Canaan no matter when the game is played.
New Canaan senior quarterback Matt Milano already has thrown eight touchdown passes, picking up where he left off last season when he tossed a state-record 42. The Rams have scored 90 points in season-opening wins over Bassick and Trinity Catholic.
The Mustangs will be without wide receiver Kevin Krug, who suffered a knee injury in Friday's 29-19 loss to Darien, but tailback Devin Lofton should be at full strength after suffering a cramp on the first play of the second half against the Blue Wave.
Friday marks the third meeting between New Canaan and Warde since Della Volpe took the Mustangs' job in 2009. The Rams won the two previous meetings, including a 34-13 victory last season.
