Fairfield Sr Babe Ruth (16U) lost to Newtown 7 - 1 last Sunday, June 15th, at Tunxis Hill.
The score was not indicative of their pitching, however, as starter Nick Stevens pitched 4 solid innings, giving up 3 earned runs and striking out 6. Roger Johns pitched 3 impressive innings in relief, giving up just 1 run on 1 hit and 1 walk while striking out 2.
Fairfield started with an early deficit as 3 runs scored in due to 3 errors in the first inning. Newtown scored 3 more in the second on a 2-out bases-loaded double.
The last 5 innings saw a much better performance as both teams pitched well and played solid defense, scoring just one run each.
Offensively, Nick Stevens' (1-3, 2B, R) lead-off double in the 5th followed by Colin Burns' (1-3, 3B, RBI) triple provided Fairfield's lone score. Matt Reich (2-3) and Nick Yee (1-2, BB) reached base twice.
Despite the loss, all of the father's polled at the game agreed with the coach that they would much rather watch their son play baseball on Father's Day than attend some silly picnic! :)
