Fairfield Teen Starts 'Good News Only' Newsletter

FAIRFIELD, CT — Amid uncertain times, a Fairfield teen is choosing to focus on the positive.

Kush Maisuria, a 16-year-old sophomore at Fairfield Ludlowe High School, recently created an email newsletter called SunShow to spotlight uplifting messages and good news happening despite the new coronavirus that has been spreading across the state and the country for months.

“There’s just still so many people doing good everywhere and I wanted to contribute to that,” Maisuria said.

SunShow came about after Maisuria found himself with more free time than usual as he learned from home while school buildings were — and continue to be — closed to prevent transmission of the virus, which is associated with the deaths of nearly 2,500 Connecticut residents and has resulted in widespread business closures. Maisuria wanted to spend the extra time doing something positive and said he felt spreading good news was, “just really needed right now.”

Maisuria uses the online publishing platform Medium to host the newsletter, a roundup of inspirational quotes, upbeat stories, bright spots from around the internet, ideas for how to spread kindness and more. The most recent SunShow newsletter included a list of businesses that are getting creative to keep serving customers during the virus outbreak, several cute animal videos and gifs, and a callout challenging readers to write a thank-you card.

“My mission through SunShow is to help people start their morning with a smile despite everything going on externally,” Maisuria said in an email. “I may not be able to help much directly during this crisis, but I do want to do my part by spreading positivity.”

Maisuria finds the content he highlights on SunShow through major news networks, but also on subreddits dedicated to collecting and sharing good news.

Maisuria’s other interests include programming and history. He is also a member of the Norwalk River Rowing Association crew club.
