FAIRFIELD, CT — Firefighters extinguished a blaze Sunday at a Fairfield restaurant, according to the fire department.

Fairfield firefighters responded early Sunday morning to a kitchen fire at Jersey Mike’s Subs on Black Rock Turnpike, the department said in a Facebook post. The restaurant manager had lit the cook top grill, noticed a natural gas-fed fire behind it, and called 911. Firefighters arrived within five minutes and extinguished the blaze.

ā€œLuckily, early occupant notification, fast call processing by Fairfield’s 911 Center and a quick firefighter response time, with proper construction practices that follow the national fire codes prevented a multi-million dollar loss at this property,ā€ Assistant Chief Erik Kalapir said in the Facebook post.

ā€œResidents are encouraged to call 911 when they detect an odor of natural gas, because early odor detection and notification can prevent a catastrophic fire.ā€

Commercial property owners and managers should also maintain access keys for emergency responders in their Knox Box system, the Facebook post said.
