New Event Revisits Burning Of Fairfield In Theatrical Performance

The performance and walking tour will feature professional actors as well as Revolutionary War reenactors.

FAIRFIELD, CT — A new event called The Road to Independence: The Burning of Fairfield will take place during Independence Day weekend, according to the Fairfield Museum and History Center. The outdoor performance and walking tour will be offered 1 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. July 6 and 2:30 p.m. July 7 on the historic Museum Commons and Town Green.

On July 7, 1779, Fairfield was invaded in an attack by 2,500 British troops. The local Patriot militia fought to protect the town’s homes and property from destruction, but by the end of the day on July 8, more than 170 structures had been burned, or were burning, in the once prosperous and bucolic community.

With professional actors and directors from Fairfield Center Stage, the museum will go inside the Burning of Fairfield with a portrayal of the sacrifices made for independence. The performance was written by Tracy Brigden and is being directed by Eli Newsom. The hour-long tour, featuring the 54th Regiment Revolutionary War reenactors, will visit the recently restored Sun Tavern and other historic sites on the Town Green.
