Hartford Firefighter had Drugs in System at Time of Fairfield Crash: Report

The man's truck went off the road and crashed into a tree, according to police.

FAIRFIELD, CT — A Hartford firefighter is accused of being high on heroin when his truck went off the road and crashed into a tree in Fairfield, according to the Fairfield Citizen.

The Citizen reports Harry E. Barrett, 29, of Glastonbury, turned himself in on an arrest warrant in connection to the Sept. 9 accident in which his Toyota Tacoma crashed into a tree on Somerset Avenue at about 2 p.m.

Barrett was found to have opiates and cocaine in his blood at the time of the accident, according to the Citizen. Police also have an active arrest warrant for a female passenger who ran from the scene after the accident.

Barrett, who has been a member of the Hartford Fire Department since 2008, is currently on administrative leave without pay pending the outcome of an investigation, according to FOX61.

Barrett had initially told responding officers that his foot slipped off the brake pedal leading to the crash, but police said he had slurred speech and appeared to be intoxicated, according to FOX 61.
