"The notification of [the] fire by a passer-by contributed to the rapid response, rescue and extinguishment of this fire," said Shift Commander and Assistant Chief Roger Caisse in a statement.
Damage to the home is estimated at $250,000, according to Caisse, due to heavy smoke and fire damage to the first floor of the house. Officials posted the home as temporarily uninhabitable.

The cause of the fire is under investigation by Fire Marshal and Assistant Chief Phil Higgins.
"Close before you doze," Caisse recommended to residents to help avoid the spread of fire. The process "involves closing all doors in the home before sleep as this can help create a barrier against deadly levels of toxic carbon monoxide, smoke and flames, and potentially save someone’s life."
