Injury Forces Fairfield K-9 Ruger Into Retirement

Ruger, who joined the force in 2011, will be retired at this week's police commission meeting.

A genetic back injury has forced Fairfield K-9 Ruger into retirement.

NBC Connecticut reports the Fairfield Police Department will officially retire Ruger at Wednesday night’s police commission meeting.

Ruger was injured getting out of a police car and his back never healed correctly and it prevents him from continuing his service as a police dog, according to NBC.

Ruger joined the force in 2011 and was united with his handler Officer Kevin Wells.

K9 Officer Ruger was born February 23rd 2010 and is a German Shepherd, dark sable in color. He comes from a long line of working dogs and was selected due to his temperament, high drive and determination to please. He was trained from an early age in obedience and tracking and is certified in Schutzhund Level I. He arrived in the U.S. in June of 2011 where he was united with his handler Officer Kevin Wells. Ruger lived and bonded with Officer Wells for several months before his formal training to ensure a successful outcome.
