ART/PLACE Gallery of Fairfield presents Lina Morielli: "ON MANY LEVELS", featuring a selection of abstract work from her last series begun at the beginning of the pandemic also including her most recent work to date. On display will be colored pencil drawings, mono prints, (being shown for the first time) gouache paintings on paper and acrylic paintings on canvas. Morielli is interested in the subconscious, memories that resurface, trauma that lingers and the external forces of global events that determine and influence her creativity. She references fifty years of art experience using a compilation of markings, symbols and materials that have become her personal language.
Morielli’s work has been exhibited widely in Fairfield County, Connecticut and Westchester, NY, but also has been featured in solo exhibitions in New York and Los Angeles. Her work has also been exhibited in public spaces as part of the Connecticut Artists Collection as well as several permanent collections at area hospitals and universities including: State Superior Court House, Yale Medical Center, Stamford Health System and Sacred Heart University, College of Education and Healthcare.
Lina Morielli was born in Montreal and grew up in Darien, Connecticut. After twenty years living and working in New York City, she moved to Stamford where she is an active member of that city’s creative community. President of the Loft Artist’s Association for three years and a board member on approximately one-dozen nonprofits over the last three decades, Morielli has enriched the city’s cultural and educational landscape. She has taught at afterschool and summer art programs and curated exhibitions in the area, including fifteen years of exhibitions in Stamford’s Mayor’s Gallery. Morielli’s experience in art and design includes studies at Parsons School of Design and three decades in New York City designing and editing crafts for Woman’s Day and Family Circle magazines, among others. This background informs the tactile nature of her studio practice where, Morielli explains, the “immediacy of materials….help me access and express my ideas quickly."
Art/Place Gallery celebrates over 40 years as a not-for-profit artist run gallery, located in the center of downtown Fairfield, Connecticut. Founded in 1981, Art/Place opened its doors in the Southport Railroad Station, which in 2008 was destroyed by fire, eventually leading to our current home at 70 Sanford St, located in Fairfield's Arts District, where we share space with the popular Fairfield Theatre Company.
The mission of Art/Place is to provide a place where professional and emerging artists can interact creatively and exhibit without the restrictions that might be imposed by a commercial gallery. Members can experiment and develop work in a broad range of mediums and subject matter. Additionally, our mission includes interaction with the community by way of rotating solo or group exhibits, art talks, lectures, demonstrations, workshops and critiques.
