FAIRFIELD, CT — M&T Bank will close one of its Stop & Shop branches in Fairfield early next year, as the bank continues to streamline its services following its acquisition of People's United Bank earlier this year.

The branch in the Stop & Shop at 760 Villa Ave. in Fairfield is scheduled to close on Feb. 17, but all the branch's staffers will be given jobs at some of the bank's other nearby locations, according to M&T Bank spokesperson Max Reiss.

In 2021, People's United announced the closure of several of its Stop & Shop branches in Connecticut, and M&T Bank made the decision to keep open 27 of them open.

"We analyzed the closure plan, and we determined it made most sense for the communities we serve to keep many of those branches open, in addition to allocating appropriate resources to the areas where they would see a Stop & Shop branch closure," Reiss said in an email to Patch.

Though the Villa Avenue branch is closing, M&T will still maintain locations in Fairfield at 1055 Post Road; 1237 Stratfield Road; and 1940 Black Rock Turnpike.

Customers of the Villa Avenue branch might lose a bit of convenience with its closing, but Reiss said that in most cases, M&T tries to keep branches open that are near one's that are closing.

Such is the case of the Villa Avenue location, because the Black Rock Turnpike branch is less than a mile away.
