FAIRFIELD, CT — A crowd of Fairfield leaders and community members gathered Thursday morning on the Town Green to honor those who served.

The Fairfield Veterans Day Ceremony was held in front of the Veterans Wall of Honor. During the event, sponsored by American Legion Posts 74 and 143, town officials recognized the late Michael J. Daly, a World War II veteran and lifelong Fairfielder, who received the Medal of Honor. Daly single-handedly killed 15 German soldiers and destroyed three machine-gun nests. A plaque with his name will be installed at the base of the flagpole in front of Old Town Hall.

Officials in attendance Thursday included First Selectwoman Brenda Kupchick; Selectman Tom Flynn; state Reps. Cristin McCarthy Vahey, Laura Devlin and Jennifer Leeper; Chief of Police Robert Kalamaras; Fire Chief Denis McCarthy; Post 143 Commander Chris DeWitt; and others. The proceedings were overseen by Joe Lebinski, senior vice commander of American Legion Post 74 and adjutant of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9427.
