Rob Blanchard Has a Plan for Healthcare. His Opponent Has Silence

As a physician dedicated to the public good through equitable access to quality health services, housing and food security, I know how important legislative leadership in Hartford is for these critical issues. The campaign for who will represent us as our State Senator for the 28^th District offers a stark difference when it comes to healthcare and social policy. Like tests prepared us from back in high school Civics class, let’s compare and contrast.

The Democratic candidate, Rob Blanchard, makes his position clear with a well-thought-out legislative agenda. On health care alone:

· Make health coverage more affordable for small businesses and their employees by expanding access to well-regulated self-funded and multiple employer health plans (MEWAs) so local businesses can offer better coverage without breaking the bank and their employees aren't the ones who pay the price.

· Hold prescription drug costs accountable by strengthening Connecticut's Prescription Drug Affordability Board and push for real limits on what patients pay out of pocket for the medications they depend on.

· Eliminate hidden hospital fees by supporting real transparency and limits on “facility fees” added to hospital bills for routine care, so a checkup doesn't come with a surprise charge.

On the other hand, there is the Republican candidate. Amid the platitudes without substances seen on Amybeth Laroche’s policy positions from her website, there is not even a mention of what she would advocate concerning health care, housing or protecting our citizens from hunger.

But we do have some indication about where she stands on the MAGA spectrum when Trump’s spending cuts jeopardized healthcare, housing and even food for some of our most vulnerable neighbors, including veterans. Through Senate Bill 83, Gov. Lamont established a $330 million fund from the unspent balance of a $500 million allocation made in November, 2025, to mitigate the impacts of these draconian Republican measures. On Instagram, Ms. Laroche said she would not have supported SB 83 because “Leadership [Gov. Lamont and the Democrats] chose confrontation over collaboration.” So, she would have us join her as collaborators for Trump’s cruelty?

Well, I call SB 83 a bill that stands up to a bully bent on destroying the fabric of our country with such cuts to the public good in favor of policies such as a faux triumphal arch and an unnecessary war costing us billions to name two of dozens of such lunacies. If Ms. Laroche would not confront such abhorrent policies, I know someone will: the Democratic / Independent Party candidate, Rob Blanchard. His solid stand on these issues in sharp contrast to his opponent’s siding with Trump is one of the many reasons I’m voting for Rob and I hope you will too.
