Sexual Assault At Beach Never Occurred: Fairfield Police

Police say the alleged victim has retracted her statement and confirmed that she was not sexually assaulted at the beach.

FAIRFIELD, CT — An 18-year-old Bridgeport resident made up allegations that she was sexually assaulted at Jennings Beach in Fairfield last week, according to police. At about 4:40 p.m. on Aug. 1, police received a report of a sexual assault at Jennings Beach. The alleged victim told police that the assault occurred at about 11:45 a.m. in one of the walking paths that lead from the beach to the parking lot.

A description of the suspect was provided to police. The suspect was described as a black male, approximately 19 years old, 5-feet, 10-inches to 6-feet tall, with a medium complexion and average build. He was wearing a bright red T-shirt, zip-fly shorts and beige sandals. Police were told the suspect was seen walking west on the beach with two other black males of similar age minutes before the assault.

While investigating the allegations, the Fairfield Detective Bureau found “no evidence to corroborate the victim’s account” of what had occurred, according to Lt. Robert Kalamaras. (To sign up for Fairfield breaking news alerts and more, click here.)

Kalamaras said after further investigation, the 18-year-old female complainant retracted her statement to detectives and “confirmed that she was not a victim of a sexual assault, nor was she the victim of any other crime.”

“Despite the outcome of this incident, the Fairfield Police Department takes every report of sexual assault seriously and conducts a full and thorough investigation into all complaints,” Kalamaras said. “It is our hope that this discovery does not discourage future crime victims from coming forward and restores public confidence that our community is safe.”
