Sign up for a Special Day of Learning

One Day University provides a taste of college life in today's hectic world. Come and learn.

If you combine curiosity, intelligence and entrepreneurship, you might create Steven Schragis, a man I would name “Mr. One Day University.”Several years ago while strolling on his daughter’s college campus, experiencing Parents Weekend, Schragis overheard like-minded adults musing about how much fun it would be to go back to college, certainly more fun than currently paying for that privilege. An idea was formed in that “Eureka moment” and One Day University was born.

Whether you ever attended college or never had the opportunity, now is your chance to experience the joy of learning, without a term paper due or the necessity of cramming down a dozen thick books for intellectual digestion. On Saturday, September 16, from 9:30 a.m. to 4:15 p.m., the Fairfield University campus, at the Quick Center for the Performing Arts, on 1073 North Benson Road in Fairfield, will be your ticket to college learning for the day.

Come be inspired, entertained and educated. Stretch your imagination and tickle your intelligence. Explore ideas and challenge your traditional notions. Have fun. Discuss and debate concepts that are relevant. One Day University will do all that and more. Take a seat and hear top professors from a quartet of award-winning schools present topics of interest that affect how we live.

First up, from 9:30 a.m. to 10:45 a.m., Wendy Schiller from Brown University will discuss “What Would the Founding Fathers Think of America Today?” This intriguing topic will compare and contrast our earliest history as a nation with the current scene in the White House and create a sounding board for discussion. Ms. Schiller is the recipient of an Undergraduate Teaching Award.

The morning will continue with “The Civil War and Abraham Lincoln: What’s Fact and What’s Fiction?” presented by Louis Masur of Rutgers University, who won the Clive Prize for Teaching Excellence. From 11 a.m. to 12:15 p.m., Masur will explore and challenge our pre-conceived notions about one of our most respected leaders and reveal the truths behind the myths.

In the afternoon, from 1:30 p.m. to 2:45 p.m., Jeremy Suri from the University of Texas will address the fascinating topic “The Impossible Presidency: the Rise and Fall of America’s Highest Office.” Mr. Suri has received the Outstanding Teaching Award and will tackle our present
involving situation at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.

Concluding the afternoon, from 3 p.m. to 4:15 p.m. will be Scott Plous who received the Connecticut Professor of the Year Award from Wesleyan University, attacking the traumatic topic “America’s New Era: The Psychology of Terrorism.” When the world is dealing with the threats of being vulnerable, the fear of feeling constantly under siege , on our streets, churches, schools, transportation, where we live and work, what is the answer to feeling safety?

The day promises to be exciting and provocative. To sign up or if you have questions, call 1-800-300-3438 or go online to OneDayU.com.
