FAIRFIELD, CT — Pequot Library in Southport has appointed Peter Van Heerden as its next executive director following a national search, Patch has learned.

Van Heerden, a Westport resident, brings more than 20 years of experience in the arts, culture and heritage sector, with work spanning the United States and abroad. His background includes roles as an artist, educator and executive leader, with a focus on organizational development, public engagement and long-term sustainability.

He replaces Stephanie Coakley, who stepped down last year, after nearly a decade in the role. Nelson North served as interim executive director during the search.

Most recently, Van Heerden has led cultural organizations through periods of change, expanding programming and partnerships, strengthening governance and operations, and developing fundraising strategies aimed at long-term financial stability. His leadership has emphasized increasing access and relevance while maintaining fiscal oversight.

Pequot Library, founded 135 years ago, serves both as a historic research library with rare books and manuscripts and as a community-based cultural institution. Board President Ali Fellowes said Van Heerden’s experience reflects the balance required to preserve the library’s collections while adapting to contemporary audiences.

"We were looking for someone who understands that rare books and manuscripts are tools, not relics," Fellowes said in a statement. "Peter brings a rare combination of global experience, cultural fluency, and disciplined leadership. He understands how historic institutions must evolve thoughtfully to remain vital, and how strong leadership creates the conditions for growth, trust, and impact."

Van Heerden, who started on Thursday, said he looks forward to working with the library’s board, staff and community.

"I am honored to join Pequot Library at this moment," Van Heerden said. "The library’s history,
collections, and educational mission are extraordinary. I look forward to working with the Board,
staff, and community to ensure the library continues to serve as a place of discovery, learning,
and cultural exchange for generations to come."

The appointment comes as Pequot Library pursues strategic initiatives that include expanding partnerships and planning capital improvements.
