FAIRFIELD, CT — A stolen car involved in a burglary last week was found by police after it crashed into a basketball hoop and then a tree, according to authorities.

The incident began about 2 a.m. Thursday in the 200 block of Taunton Road, police said. Officers responded to a report of three young males trying to break into a vehicle, according to police, who said the trio left in separate vehicles, traveling onto Mill Plain Road.

One — a gray Volvo sedan — continued speeding south on Mill Plain Road, while another — a black 2013 BMW 525xi turned onto Lakeside Drive. Officers did not pursue either vehicle but did find the BMW abandoned in a wooded area in the 300 block of Lakeside Drive after it struck a basketball hoop and a small tree, according to police, who added the car had been stolen from a home on Unquowa Road.
