Supporters Defend Giant Steps Amid Criticism of Expansion Plan
Neighbors opposed the plan and complained about the school, which services students on the autism spectrum, at a recent public hearing.

Supporters of Giant Steps are speaking up for the school after its neighbors spoke out against it, opposing its plan to expand at a recent Planning and Zoning Commission public hearing, according to the Fairfield Citizen.
The Citizen reports Giant Steps, which services students on the autism spectrum and has been located on Barberry Road in Southport for the past 15 years, is proposing to use a vacant building on the property for its “Next Step” program for students who have out-grown the “system.”
Some of the opposition complained that Giant Steps’ teachers and staff speed down the street and toss garbage and cigarettes out their car windows, while others said the expansion is a business enterprise and no longer a school, according to the Citizen.
