Tappan Wilder SKYPES with Fairfield Ludlowe Drama Club
A Wilder Time, 2 one-acts, "The Long Christmas Dinner" &"Pullman Car Hiawatha" by Thornton Wilder discussed by Cast/Crew with Tappan Wilder
The Fairfield Ludlowe High School Drama Club students had the amazing opportunity to SKYPE with Tappan Wilder in California. Tappan Wilder is the nephew of Thornton Wilder and Literary Manager for the Wilder Estate. Mr. Wilder generously answered questions and helped the Cast and Crew better understand the plays. His words have informed and enriched rehearsals. During the session, Mr. Wilder stressed to the students how universally famous these 2 plays are.
A Wilder Time, the fall play featuring the 2 one-acts the Fairfield Ludlowe H.S. Drama Club will be presenting on Nov. 30 & Dec. 1, were written 7 years before Our Town, and reflect the superb development of his masterpiece.
In all his plays, Wilder is contemplating and encapsulating Life and the meaning of Life, especially noting how quickly our precious time together passes. Experimenting with a minimalist theatrical style, “The Long Christmas Dinner” covers 90 years of dinners in one home in less than an hour. People pass so quickly through the 2 portals of Life and Death that Time does fly, and often simultaneously appears to move very slowly. “The Long Christmas Dinner” is a yearly tradition at The Public Theatre in NYC.

The fearless playwright also grapples with the questions of how people are able to survive tragedy in their lives. In “Pullman Car Hiawatha” lives pass as they journey on a train, separate but equal, with each passenger facing life’s daily struggles, both mundane and terrifying, while the planets float by and the hours tick away.
