Traffic Stop Leads to Seizure of 80 Bags of Heroin, Arrests on Route 15 in Fairfield: Police
Police say the driver was following too closely.
FAIRFIELD, CT — A traffic stop led to the seizure of more than 80 bags of heroin and the arrest of two Maine residents on Route 15 in Fairfield, according to Connecticut State Police.
At about 6:30 p.m. on Feb. 6, state troopers conducted a traffic stop for a vehicle that was following too closely on Route 15, just north of Exit 44 in Fairfield, according to police.
During the stop, police observed a used heroin baggy in plain view.

Police said a subsequent K-9 and manual search of the vehicle and the occupants led to the discovery of more than 80 bags of heroin, a small amount of marijuana and various drug paraphernalia. The Wilton Police Department’s narcotics detection K-9 unit provided assistance, according to police.

Riley R. Cannell, 22, and Anthony J. McLaughlin, 32, both of Veazie, Maine, were placed under arrest.

Cannell was charged with illegal possession of unstamped drug, conspiracy to commit/possession with intent to sell, illegal possession of narcotics, conspiracy to commit/illegal possession of narcotics and possession of a controlled substance or less than ½ ounce of cannabis.

McLaughlin was charged with illegal possession of unstamped drug, failure to drive at reasonable distance, conspiracy to commit/illegal sale controlled substance, conspiracy to commit/illegal possession of narcotics and conspiracy to commit/possession of a controlled substance or less than ½ ounce of cannabis.
Both were held on a $15,000 bond and were scheduled to be arraigned on Tuesday.
