Trump Tweaks Malloy Again Over Losing GE To Boston

President Donald Trump brought up the loss of GE again while talking to a potential Connecticut gubernatorial candidate at the White House.

FAIRFIELD, CT — President Donald Trump, who famously ripped Gov. Dannel P. Malloy for losing General Electric to Boston during a campaign stop in Fairfield in August 2016, referenced the loss again to a potential Connecticut gubernatorial candidate in the Oval Office on Wednesday, according to the Hartford Courant.

The Courant reports New Britain Mayor Erin Stewart, a Republican who is exploring a run for governor, was at the White House Wednesday for a roundtable discussion regarding Opportunity Zones provided by tax reform. During the discussion, Trump asked Stewart how she felt when Connecticut lost GE and said, “Well if you were governor that would not have happened, right?,” adding that he didn’t think it would have happened, according to the Courant.

Trump came to Connecticut for a campaign stop at Sacred Heart University in Fairfield in August 2016 and called Malloy a "garbage" governor. He also said that Connecticut residents should vote for him as a "protest vote for losing GE."

"How did you lose GE?" Trump said to the crowd at the time. “He's a bad governor. You've got a bad governor. He hasn't done his job."

Meanwhile, things haven’t gone well for GE since it was lured to Massachusetts with about $150 million in tax breaks and incentives in early 2016. Ever since then, it's been bad news for the multinational conglomerate, which has seen a shared drop of about 42 percent over the past year.

The company’s stocks plummeted last month and new CEO John Flannery said the company is taking a fresh look its structure, which could involve major GE divisions becoming separately traded units. CNN Money also recently reported that GE is facing a $31 billion pension “nightmare.”
