FAIRFIELD, CT — Fairfield firefighters rushed to aid a woman and her dogs Friday after she fell into an icy Perry’s Mill Pond.

About 1:30 p.m., a Burr Street resident reported that a woman had fallen through the ice, according to the Fairfield Fire Department. When firefighters arrived, they found the woman had been brought to safety but her dogs were still out on the ice-coated pond.

An ambulance took the woman to a hospital for a precautionary medical evaluation and firefighters assisted the dogs and turned them over to animal control for holding until they could be returned to the woman.

“Our firefighters continually train for ice water rescue situations like today,” the department said in a news release. “We would like to remind everyone to always use caution while near ice. If your pet (wanders) on the ice call 911 immediately for help before attempting to rescue them and placing yourself in danger. In only a few short minutes the cold winter waters could cause hypothermia to set in and place your life at risk.”
