FAIRFIELD, CT — An elderly woman was taken to a hospital after a man tried to steal her purse Tuesday at a Fairfield grocery store, police said.

Officers were called just after 7 p.m. to Stop & Shop, 760 Villa Ave., according to police, who said the 70-year-old woman was in the store’s vestibule when a stranger — dressed all in black and wearing a ski mask — came up behind her and grabbed her purse.

The man tried to take the bag but the woman refused to let go, causing both the robber and victim to fall to the ground, police said. The man stole the purse and fled in a small sedan occupied by three other people, according to police, while the woman was taken to a nearby hospital for evaluation.
