WSHU Public Radio Group News Team Wins Five

 

The WSHU Public Radio Group has once again demonstrated why it is among the broadcast industry’s most respected public radio resources. Its news team again earned five prestigious national Public Radio News Directors Inc. (PRNDI) awards at its 2013 annual awards program held in Cleveland, Ohio.

WSHU’s news team members led by News Director Naomi Starobin earned awards in the following categories: Breaking News, Second Place for its “WSHU breaking coverage of the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary;” Nationally Edited-Breaking News, Second Place for its “WSHU breaking coverage of Newtown shooting, NPR edited;” Nationally Edited-Continuing Coverage, Second Place for its “WSHU continuing coverage of Newtown shooting, NPR edited;” Soft Feature, First Place for its “Disabled high school student finds his voice on the radio;” and Student  Hard Feature, Second Place for its “Walking a beat: Community Policing in New  Haven.” On hand to present the awards was NPR’s Peabody Award-winning host Scott Simon.

In announcing the award winners, PRNDI President George Bodarky stated, “PRNDI has been honoring the best work in public radio for over 25 years, and is pleased to be able to recognize the great work that is being done by local public radio stations.”

 

This is not the first time WSHU has been recognized for its excellence in journalism and news reporting. WSHU’s news team members have been consistent winners in various industry award programs. One of the most noteworthy is WSHU Reporter Mark Herz, host of “All Things Considered,” who won the Radio Television Digital New Association’s “2011 National Edward R. Murrow Award” for his two-part story, “Policing the Mentally Ill.”
