The exhibition explores the long-established genre of the “Cries,” or the representation of street vendors “crying” or broadcasting their wares.&nbsp;The chronological scope of the exhibition is between 1711, when the first edition of Marcellus Laroon’s Cryes of the City of London was issued, and the publication of John Thomson’s Street Life in London in 1877. &nbsp;The focus is primarily on British print culture, but the exhibition also includes works in other media and is transnational in scope, with depictions of vendors in Calcutta (present day Kolkata), the British Caribbean, Lima, New York, and Paris as well.Although the “Cries” genre encapsulated vendors with a wide range of wares, we are focusing on works depicting vendors of foodstuffs, and researching the kinds of produce, dairy products, fish, meat and baked goods that were sold on the streets of cities at this period.&nbsp;The exhibition, which is on view through August 21, is free and open to the public Wednesday afternoons from 2-4:30 pm and other times by appointment.&nbsp;

United Way is hosting the 52nd Anniversary Golf Tournament, with proceeds benefiting United Way-supported initiatives that help end poverty across the 860 region.&nbsp;United Way of Central and Northeastern Connecticut and United Way of West Central Connecticut entered a strategic alliance designed to enhance community impact, streamline operations, and expand services across the region. The organization now serves one-third of the state’s population across 56 cities and towns. We are proud to continue to host this annual golf tournament with proceeds benefitting the organization and our work to end poverty in the 860 region. We’re excited to invite students in&nbsp;grades 4–7&nbsp;to campus for&nbsp;S.P.A.R.K.—a free, hands-on&nbsp;morning of discovery&nbsp;at Kingswood Oxford on&nbsp;Saturday, May 16.
S.P.A.R.K.&nbsp;stands for&nbsp;Science. Play. Action. Research. Knowledge,&nbsp;and that’s exactly what the morning is all about. Students will dive into interactive labs, ask big questions, and explore how science connects to the world around them.
Throughout the morning, students will rotate through all three engaging sessions:
Snack Science: Cracking the Code of Carbs, Fats &amp; Proteins
Students will test everyday foods to uncover the building blocks of life - carbohydrates, lipids, and proteins.
From Cabbage to Chemistry: A Color-Changing Exploration of pH
Using red cabbage as a natural indicator, students will experiment with acids and bases and watch chemistry come alive in vibrant color.
Air Apparent: The Invisible Force All Around Us
Through hands-on experiments, students will explore the properties of air—and discover just how powerful something invisible can be.
