Update: Victim Identified in Fatal Crash on Black Rock Turnpike in Fairfield

The crash happened on Black Rock Turnpike, separate from the major accident on the highway this morning.

Fairfield resident Albert J. Kavalecz, 85, of Jay Circle, died at St. Vincent’s Medical Center from injuries sustained from a collision with a tractor-trailer truck at Black Rock Turnpike and Burroughs Road on Tuesday morning.

It was a busy, and tragic, morning in Fairfield where police and firefighters also responded to a fatal accident on I-95 around 3 a.m.

Kavalecz was trapped inside his car and Fairfield Firefighters used the Jaws of Life to gain access and remove him from the vehicle.

Life support efforts were initiated by AMR Paramedics assisted by Fairfield Firefighters on scene and enroute to St. Vincent’s Medical Center.

Fairfield Assistant Fire Chief George Gomola, the incident commander said that Kavalecz was in “extremely critical condition at the time emergency crews arrived on scene. Police, Fire, and EMS worked together to provide lifesaving emergency medical treatment and rapid extrication.”
