Farmington Obituary: Charles Mierzwa, 94

Charles F. Mierzwa, 94, of Farmington, husband of the late Genevieve J. (Ptak) Mierzwa, passed away peacefully Wednesday, February 7th, 2018.

Charles was born in Utica, NY. At age 2 he and his parents moved to a farm in nearby Frankfort, NY. He went to a 1 room school house down the hill from the house and did chores after school on the farm. After high school, he went to trade school and worked at Savage Arms making guns for the Army.

In 1941, after 2 deferments, he was drafted into the Army. Basic training was in Gainesville, GA after which he was deployed to England for the ETO, OMD 5. He landed in Normandy, France and traveled to Belgium and Stuttgart, Germany. In 1943, after 2 extensions, he was honorably discharged as Sergeant in the Rear Echelon Division in the 1st Army.

When he returned home he went to work at Remmington Rand as a machinist and was promoted to foreman until Rand curtailed operations. He then went to work at Chicago Pneumatic and then went on to work at Brunner Manufacturing Co. In 1959 Brunner Manufacturing was bought out by Dunham-Bush and was moved to West Hartford. He transferred with the company and settled in Farmington.

In 1973 he became a Casting Buyer which included working with various foundries and in 1975 became a Purchasing Agent for castings and all outside machine parts. He traveled to factories along the east coast spending much of his time during the week away from home. He always returned with a beautiful figurine for his wife which she cherished. In 1985, he retired at the age of 62.

He continued working in his small machine shop in his basement which he loved to do. Charlie was the go to guy to fix everything and anything for his friends and neighbors. He took up guitar as a hobby and joined a small group of guys singing country western and blue grass songs known as the Yankee Blue Grass Jammers.

He is survived by his two daughters and their husbands, Janet K. and Dennis Jendrzejewski of New Hartford and Audrey M. and Scott Daggett of Farmington and one granddaughter, Sarah L. Daggett of Farmington. He was predeceased by his sister, Ida E. Mierzwa and his brother, Matthew H. Mierzwa.

Friends may call at The Ahern Funeral Home, 111 Main St., Rt. 4, Unionville on Monday (Feb. 12) from 4:00-7:00pm. Funeral procession from The Ahern Funeral Home will be Tuesday (Feb. 13) at 9:15am followed by the Funeral Liturgy in the Church of St. Patrick, 110 Main St., Farmington at 10:00am.
