
Richard John McAuliffe, 76, of Farmington, beloved husband of Joanne (Cromack) McAuliffe for 54 years passed away peacefully on May 13, 2016 after a long illness. Alzheimer’s took away the memories of his life from him but they will live on with those who knew and loved him.
Dick was born on November 29, 1939 in Hartford to the late William and Mary (Rose) McAuliffe. Dick was raised in Unionville and attended the Farmington School System. He played basketball and baseball at Farmington High School when the team won the State Championship in 1957. At the age of 17 he signed a contract with the Detroit Tigers Baseball Organization. He played 4 years in the minor leagues and 14 years in the Major Leagues with the Tigers. He finished his career with the Boston Red Sox. He was an American League All-Star in 1965, 1966, and 1967. The highlight of his career was in 1968 when Detroit won the World Series.
After retiring from baseball, Dick returned to Connecticut. He had several business ventures in Connecticut and Florida. Golf became his passion. He belonged to several golf clubs in Connecticut and Florida and played in many charity events. He treasured the many friendships he made during this time. His greatest joy was his family. He was a loving father and grandfather enjoying and participating in their activities. “Papa” was their biggest supporter and was always there for them.

Besides his wife, Dick is survived by his daughter Mary Boyle of Farmington, his son Michael McAuliffe of Farmington, his grandsons: Ryan Boyle of Farmington, and Jonathan Boyle and his fiancé Christine Hanford of Middletown. He also leaves his sisters Eleanor Dutton of Plainville and Mary Tassone and her husband John of Unionville and a brother George McAuliffe and his wife Florence of Bristol, and a brother-in-law William Cromack and his wife Lorraine of Holland, MA. He also leaves many nieces and nephews. Dick was predeceased by a brother William McAuliffe.

You will always hold a special place in our hearts for your wonderful care of Dick and the love and hugs you gave to him and to us. You all are truly special.
