Farmington’s Students and Businesses Give Generously
More Than $10,000 Raised in March 2017 for Meals on Wheels, run by Services for the Elderly of Farmington

More than $10,000 was raised in March 2017 by Farmington’s students and businesses in support of Services for the Elderly of Farmington's March for Meals drive in support of its Meals on Wheels program. Students raised $4,800 by donating change. Farmington’s businesses were also very generous this year as in years past, contributing over $5,000.
During the week of March 20 at each elementary school, classrooms compete to see which will raise the most money in their school, and the top classroom at each school wins a popsicle party. The classroom that raises the most money out of all the classrooms in all the schools wins a special celebration.
This year Darlene Beckert’s fourth grade class at Union School earned that distinction by collecting $562. Honorable mention goes to Jeremy Forgione’s sixth grade class at West Woods School, which raised $310 this year, and raised the most in 2016. And West District School raised the most as a school, with $1,540 going directly to the Meals on Wheels program. The Farmington High School and Middle School did their parts, too. Both schools organized successful fundraisers to promote March for Meals.

“We are so grateful to all the children of Farmington for taking care of their senior neighbors,” said Nancy Walker, Executive Director of Services for the Elderly of Farmington.
Year-round, more than 100 volunteers across generations help their friends and neighbors through the Meals on Wheels program, bringing nutritious, balanced meals and a friendly hello to homebound clients. Services for the Elderly’s volunteers deliver more than 10,000 meals each year.
“Meals on Wheels allows seniors to stay independent in their own homes longer,” said Mrs. Walker. “And our volunteers touch lives and lift spirits, which is just as important.”
